1858?-1937

Summary:  George ALEXANDER was born around 1858 in Louisiana. He married Georgianna DAVIS on April 20, 1881 in St. Mary Parish. They had 15* children in 35 years. He died on September 28, 1937 at the age of 79 in St. Mary Parish and was buried in Jeanerette, Iberia Parish, Louisiana.

abt. 1858- Louisiana

George was born in approx. 1858.  On his death certificate, St. Mary was originally listed as his place of birth, but it was crossed out and St. Martinville was written in it’s place.  All records that have been located for George have his residence in St. Mary Parish/Iberia Parish.  With no birth certificates being issued at this time we can only guess at his official date of birth.  With no parents listed on his death certificate either we need to look to other documents to confirm parentage.  We find that in 1900 George lives with his father Zenor.  More research needs to be done to determine who George’s mother is.

1870- 1st Ward, Iberia, Louisiana

A 10 year old George ALEXANDER lives with Zenon ALEXANDER (35), Susane ALEXANDER (56), Rosa ALEXANDER (13), Louis ALEXANDER (17), Loemy ALEXANDER (8) and Louise CHARLES (5).  Two houses over live a Charles ALEXANDER (28), Ann ALEXANDER (23), Madeline ALEXANDER (3)and Zenor ALEXANDER (5).  The 1870 census did not list the relationships of the people in the home.  While more research is needed, one can assume that this is our George, Zenon is his father and Susane is likely is grandmother or possibly his mother.  Rosa, Louis and Loemy are likely his siblings.  Charles is likely his uncle.  It is unclear who Louise Charles is.

1880- 1st Ward, St. Mary, Louisiana

A 20 year old George Alexander lives in the home with Stepfather Sylvester LEWIS (30), Desiree LEWIS (40), Clara LEWIS (28),  Aristide LEWIS (16) and Alcide LEWIS (10).  Previous editions of the Alexander History Book have concluded that is our George.  While more research is needed, it is possible that this is our George.

1881- St. Mary, Louisiana

George marries Miss Annie DAVIS on April 20, 1881.  Signatures on the document belong to George ALEXANDER and Charles ROLLINS.

1900- Police Jury Ward 7, St. Mary Louisiana

In the 1900 Census Zenor ALEXANDER age 75 lives in the home with an adult George (41), Hanna (33), Ebernisa (13), Neyman (11), Andrew (8), Rachel (7), Leila (5), and Elnora (2) ALEXANDER.  Because we know that these are the names of George’s children we can conclude that is our George and we can also conclude that Zenor is indeed his father.

1910- Police Jury Ward 7, Saint Mary, Louisiana

George ALEXANDER age 52 and his wife Anna (43) live with their children Namon (20), Andrew (19), Rachel (17), Odelia (16), Zenon (8), Alton (7), Colfax (4), Louisa (3) and Mabel (1).

1920- Police Jury Ward 7, St. Mary, Louisiana

George ALEXANDER lives with his wife Georgana (55), Elnora (22), Louisa (14), and Colfax (13).

1930- Police Jury Ward 7, St. Mary, Louisiana

A widow named George ALEXANDER age 68 lives with his son Clarence (16).  In the home next door live his son Namon ALEXANDER and family and 2 homes over live Elnora and Sheridan JOE.  This is likely our George.  Clarence can be his son as is listed or he may be a nephew or some other relative.

1937- St. Mary, Louisiana

George ALEXANDER, a widow, dies at approximately 79 years of age.  The cause of death is listed as prostate malignancy (prostate cancer) and chronic nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) with a contributory cause of chronic cystitis (inflammation of the bladder).  King ALEXANDER is the informant.

George was buried in St. Peters Cemetery in Jeanerette, Iberia Parish, Louisiana.

George was listed as Black or Negro on all documents and by the 1900 Census he could read and write.  His occupation was listed as Farmer.

1866? - 1830?

Summary:  Georgianna DAVIS was born around 1866 in Louisiana. She married George ALEXANDER on April 20, 1881 in St. Mary Parish. They had 15* children in 35 years. Georgianna’s name is recorded as Georgianna, Anna and Hannah on various records. She appeared to die somewhere between 1920 when she was in the home with George and 1930 when George was listed as a widow.

abt. 1866- Louisiana

Georgianna was born in approx. 1866 based on estimations of her age given to census takers. With no birth certificates being issued at this time we can only guess at her official date of birth and location.  With no death certificate we can’t confirm her parents.  Previous Alexander History Books have listed Lucian and Amelia as Georgianna’s parents; but there is nothing that definitely allows us to prove that fact.

1870- Alexandria, Rapides, Louisiana

A 4 year old Georgianna DAVIS lives with Lucian DAVIS (25), AMELIA DAVIS (25), Smith DAVIS (11), Sostan DAVIS (5) and Joe DAVIS (2).  The 1870 census did not list the relationships of the people in the home.  While more research is needed, it is possible that this is our Georgianna, and her father Lucian, mother Amelia and siblings.  Previous Alexander History Books have listed Lucian and Amelia as Georgianna’s parents.

1880

There have been no records that seem to match our Georgianna.  Lucian and Amelia DAVIS were located in the 1880 census in Alexandria, Rapides, Louisiana.

1881- St. Mary, Louisiana

George marries Miss Annie DAVIS on April 20, 1881.  Signatures on the document belong to George ALEXANDER and Charles ROLLINS.

1910- Police Jury Ward 7, Saint Mary, Louisiana

George ALEXANDER age 52 and his wife Anna (43) live with their children Namon (20), Andrew (19), Rachel (17), Odelia (16), Zenon (8), Alton (7), Colfax (4), Louisa (3) and Mabel (1).

1920- Police Jury Ward 7, St. Mary, Louisiana

George ALEXANDER lives with his wife Georgana (55), Elnora (22), Louisa (14), and Colfax (13).

1920-1930

George ALEXANDER is listed is a widow in the 1930 census leading us to believe that Georgianna died sometime prior.
